Morton’s Neuroma
Morton’s Neuroma is a thickening of the intermetatarsal nerve, which means at the base of the toes. The nerve swells and scar tissue forms because of friction or impingement in between metatarsal bones. Usually, the neuroma appears in between the base of 3rd and 4th toes but it can occur at any web space.
the causes are:
- shoes too narrow
- high heel shoes
- lowering of the transverse arch of the foot
- weight gain
- gait abnormality or torsion
The symptoms are:
- sensation of ball at the base of toes, underneath the foot
- toes cramping
- sensation of numbness of the affected toes
- electrical shock sensation in the affected toes
- sensation that the toes can’t move
The treatments are:
- proper shoe gear
- plantar orthotics device to re-establish the transverse arch, offload the painful area and control torsion during gait cycle
- injections
- surgery
